Payment marked as Paid before collection

Learn why a Direct Debit payment can show as Paid before the collection date and what this status means.

Written by Gemma Langley

You may notice that a Direct Debit payment is marked as Paid before its scheduled collection date. This is expected behaviour and does not mean the funds have already been collected from the payer's account.

How payment statuses work

When a Direct Debit payment is created, its status is Pending.

Once the payment has been submitted to the bank for processing, Access PaySuite updates the status to Paid. This happens before the collection date and is based on the notice period required for the Direct Debit.

Direct Debit collections

A payment that has been submitted to the bank will remain in the Paid status unless the collection is returned as unpaid and an Automated Return of Unpaid Direct Debits (ARUDD) report is received. This means it is normal for a payment to show as Paid before the collection date.

Common reasons for a failed collection include:

  • Insufficient funds

  • Account closed

  • Direct Debit instruction cancelled

  • Invalid account details

A payment showing as Paid means it has been successfully submitted to the bank for collection. It does not confirm that funds have been collected from the payer's account.
