Before updating a bank reference, you must first obtain the account holder’s permission. Updating these details will automatically cancel their existing Direct Debit and generate a new mandate.

The customer’s bank will notify them of this change. Depending on your pricing structure, a new setup fee may also be applied.

Edit a bank reference

  1. Click the Direct Debits tab on the left hand side.

  2. Scroll down to the Quick Actions panel.

  3. From the Quick Actions panel, select Amend Contract.

  4. Click Choose a customer and search by name, email address or reference.

  5. Click Choose a contract and select the active contract to amend.

  6. Select Edit Bank Reference and a note will show the current bank reference.

  7. Enter the new bank reference in the New Bank Reference field.

📌Note: The Bank Reference must be 6–18 characters long, start with a letter or number, and contain only letters (A–Z), numbers (0–9), spaces, and the characters &, -, and /.

  8. Click Update Bank Reference to save the changes.

📌Note: The Update Bank Reference button will remain inactive until the reference entered meets all format requirements. This gives you immediate feedback on whether the reference is valid.

📌Note: If you click on the X button to leave the contract amendment area, a pop up will appear to confirm that any progress will be lost if you still want to leave the area.
